Privacy Policy — Orbit
Last updated: June 7, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Jonas Peter Bichara ("Orbit," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use the Orbit mobile application (the "App"). Orbit is an ambient social-discovery map that lets you share an approximate or precise location with friends you choose, drop short-lived photo "moments" on the map, create events, and message or call your friends.
By using the App you agree to this Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.
1. A quick summary
- We are privacy-first by design. Your default location sharing is low-fidelity (city- or area-level), and the blurring happens on our servers before any data reaches your friends' devices.
- You choose, per group of friends, how precisely each group sees you. Your friends are never told how precisely you share with them.
- Photo "moments" are temporary and disappear automatically (within 24–72 hours).
- You can turn on Ghost Mode at any time to disappear from the map entirely.
- You can delete your account and all associated data from inside the App.
2. Information we collect
Information you provide:
- Account information: a username, and the phone number or email address you sign up with. You may add a profile avatar (image) and a display color.
- Content you create: photo "moments" and their captions, events you create, travel plans, messages you send, and reactions/comments.
- Reports: if you report another user or a piece of content, we collect the report and the reason you select.
Information collected automatically:
- Location data: when you grant permission, we collect your device's geographic location while you are using the App (we request "When In Use" location only). See Section 4 for exactly how location is processed and shared.
- Device and technical data: a device push-notification token, app version, device/OS type, and similar technical identifiers needed to operate the App.
- Usage data: basic information about how you interact with the App, used to operate and improve it.
Information from your device, with permission:
- Camera and photo library: to capture or select photos for moments and your profile picture. We access these only when you choose to add a photo.
- Microphone: to enable voice calls with your friends. We access the microphone only during a call.
We do not sell your personal information.
3. How we use information
We use the information we collect to:
- Create and maintain your account and authenticate you.
- Provide the core features: showing friends' approximate or precise locations, delivering moments, events, messages, and voice calls.
- Apply your privacy choices (sharing tiers, Ghost Mode, blocking).
- Send push notifications you've enabled (e.g., a friend nearby, a new message).
- Keep the App safe: review reports, enforce our rules, and prevent abuse.
- Diagnose problems and improve the App.
4. How location sharing works (important)
Location is the heart of Orbit, and we handle it carefully:
- You set the fidelity, per group. You can place each friend into a group and share at one of three tiers: Precise (your exact live pin), Area (an approximate ~2 km circle), or City (an approximate ~20 km circle).
- Blurring happens on our servers. For the Area and City tiers, your exact coordinates are snapped to a coarse grid on our servers before any location is sent to a friend's device. Your friends at those tiers never receive your raw coordinates.
- Masked asymmetry. Friends are never told which group or tier you've assigned them. There are no "best friend" rankings.
- Ghost Mode. When Ghost Mode is on, you broadcast no location and you receive no friend locations — it is reciprocal.
- Stale data is hidden. If your location hasn't refreshed in over 24 hours, you are hidden from your friends' maps.
You can change your sharing tiers, switch groups, or enable Ghost Mode at any time in the App's settings.
5. How information is shared
- With friends you choose: your location (at the tier you set), your moments (with the audience you choose — Close Friends only or All Friends), your events, your profile, and messages you send to them.
- With service providers (processors): we use trusted third parties to run the
App. They process data only on our instructions:
- Supabase — database, authentication, and file storage hosting.
- Expo — push-notification delivery.
- LiveKit — real-time voice-call infrastructure.
- Apple and Google — map rendering on their respective platforms, and app distribution.
- For legal and safety reasons: we may disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of our users or the public.
- In a business transfer: if we are involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction.
6. Data retention
- Moments expire automatically and are deleted within 24–72 hours of posting.
- Location is retained only as needed to operate the service; coarse location history is subject to the visibility windows described in the App.
- Messages, events, and profile data are retained while your account is active.
- When you delete your account, we permanently delete your account and the associated personal data, as described in Section 8.
7. Your choices and rights
- Permissions: you can grant or revoke location, camera, photo, microphone, and notification permissions at any time in your device settings.
- Sharing controls: change your per-group sharing tier or turn on Ghost Mode in the App.
- Block: you can block another user, which removes them from your experience.
- Delete your account: go to Me → Delete Account. This permanently deletes your account, moments, messages, and location data and cannot be undone.
- Access and correction: depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal data, or to object to or restrict certain processing. Contact us at the address below to exercise these rights.
8. Account deletion
You can delete your account at any time from Me → Delete Account inside the App. Deletion is permanent: it removes your authentication record and cascades to delete your associated personal data (moments, messages, location data, profile, and similar). Some records may persist briefly in backups before being overwritten on our standard backup cycle, and we may retain limited information where required by law.
9. Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including access controls that keep raw location data and your sharing preferences readable only by you, and server-side processing of location blurring. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your data.
10. Children
Orbit is not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
11. International users
We and our service providers may process and store information in countries other than where you live. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards for such transfers. If you are in the European Economic Area (EEA) or the UK, the data controller is Jonas Peter Bichara (Germany), and you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority.
12. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you in the App or by other reasonable means and update the "Last updated" date above.
13. Contact us

By downloading, installing, or using the App, you agree to this Agreement. If you do not agree, do not use the App.
1. License
We grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use the App on a device you own or control, solely for your personal, non-commercial use, and subject to this Agreement and the rules of the app store you downloaded it from.

You are responsible for the activity on your account and for keeping your login secure. Notify us promptly of any unauthorized use.
4. User content and your responsibilities
The App lets you create and share content, including photos ("moments"), captions, events, messages, and your profile ("User Content"). You retain ownership of your User Content. You grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, display, and transmit your User Content solely to operate and provide the App (for example, to show your moment to the friends you choose). This license ends when your User Content is deleted, except for copies retained briefly in routine backups.
You are solely responsible for your User Content and represent that you have the rights to share it and that it does not violate this Agreement or any law.
5. Objectionable content and zero-tolerance policy
We have zero tolerance for objectionable content or abusive behavior. You agree not to create, upload, share, or transmit content that:
- is unlawful, harassing, threatening, abusive, hateful, or bullying;
- is sexually explicit, pornographic, or exploits or endangers minors;
- is violent, gory, or promotes self-harm or illegal activity;
- is defamatory, fraudulent, deceptive, or infringes others' rights;

- reveals another person's private information without consent, or uses the App's location features to stalk, surveil, or harm anyone.
6. Reporting, blocking, and moderation
- You can report objectionable content or abusive users from within the App (on user profiles, moments, and events).
- You can block users to remove them from your experience.
- We review reports and may remove content and remove or suspend users who violate this Agreement, without notice. We act on reports of objectionable content and will remove the content and eject the offending user, consistent with applicable app-store requirements.
7. Prohibited conduct
You agree not to: reverse engineer or tamper with the App; access it by automated means; interfere with its operation or security; misuse location features to track others without consent; or use the App for any unlawful purpose.
8. Location features — no reliance for safety
The App's location features are for casual social discovery only. Location data may be approximate, delayed, blurred, or unavailable. Do not rely on the App for navigation, emergencies, or any situation where inaccurate or unavailable location could lead to harm.
9. Privacy
Your use of the App is also governed by our Privacy Policy https://theorbitapp.net/legal#privacy, which explains how we handle your information.
10. Termination
You may stop using the App and delete your account at any time from Me → Delete Account. We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate this Agreement. On termination, the license in Section 1 ends; Sections 4–14 survive.
11. Disclaimers
THE APP IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE APP WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, SECURE, OR ERROR-FREE, OR THAT LOCATION DATA WILL BE ACCURATE.
12. Limitation of liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF DATA, USE, OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE APP. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE PAST 12 MONTHS OR USD $50.

- Apple is not responsible for addressing any claims relating to the App, including product-liability, legal/regulatory, or consumer-protection claims.
- Apple is not responsible for investigating or resolving any third-party claim that the App infringes intellectual-property rights.
- You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated as "terrorist-supporting," and you are not on any U.S. Government restricted-parties list.
